Apostrophe changed to question mark in cookbook
Submitted by martina10 on December 7, 2009 - 12:58pm
Hi again,
I've uploaded a recipe and previewed a recipe book with it. I notice that one of the apostrophes ( word is mom's) has been changed to a question mark (mom?s). Can you give me a way to correct that?
Thanks,
Antonia
re:Apostrophe changed to question mark in cookbook
Hi Antonia,
Took a look in the database and what we found is that you may have keyed in something different than an apostrophe. It looks like a forward leaning tick mark (not actually found on most keyboards, so kind of strange), not a vertical up and down quote mark or apostrophe.
Don't know if this is true in your case, but sometimes with foreign language (non US English) computer systems, keyboards or character sets, it's possible to enter these alternate characters from the keyboard. They can display fine in the browser view, but we don't have a proper character translation when we generate the PDF, so a '?' appears in the PDF.
Try going back into the recipe(s) in question and replacing the tick mark with a quote mark/apostrophe (on a standard keyboard that should be the single/double quote key, usually next to the enter key) and see if that fixes the problem.
Thanks (and let us know if that helps),

Apostrophe/Quotation Marks
I just noticed that the same thing happens with quotation marks. I'm using a MAC, but it's not configured for any special language or characters.
Thanks
re: Apostrophe/Quotation Marks
OK, we went ahead and put a PDF translation for the characters you're having trouble with (Unicode/U+2000 general punctuation - single, forward, backward quotes, and a dash character). Don't mean to burden you with the technical gibberish, just keeping some notes here. Should work OK for you now.
While you may not have any special language settings on your MAC, it's possible that you may have a different language setting in your browser (Safari ?). But no worries, we'd rather try and catch these things than have users try to figure out at their end.
Thanks for bringing to our attention.
