Making Christmas cookies with Grandma was a real treat.
Upon arrival all of the fillings were already prepared and refrigerated. That’s why we can’t get any of them right now, she always had them done before we got there.
Cookie sheets were piled as high as the ceiling and probably in some sort of order, which I never really got the hang of. Butterballs were always done first. Rolled to perfection (all the same size and proportions). And don’t start another type of cookies until those were all done.
As we made dough for other cookies, once the measurement was made and added, that ingredient was immediately put away. “Don’t keep out what you are finished with”, as she would say, “Clean up as you go”. To this day, I find myself doing this with whatever I make.
Somehow the timing was always perfect. As I would have the next tray ready to go into the oven she would remove the one before. How does one make this happen?
We only needed one table, because everything was so well organized and we loved to be on top of one another.
It all seemed so precise. Try this now? Never. If I make cookies, it’s one kind at a time and it usually takes much too long.
